Student Dictionary Project
Number of Dictionaries Given Away in 2008 is Down! Up-Date on Dictionary Project. District 6450 Needs Your Assistance
Over the last few years the number of Dictionaries and/or Thesauruses given away to Illinois students has been growing. 20,526 in 2005, 51,756 in 2006, 57,023 in 2007. Thus far this year only 6,754 have been given away. So if you are looking for an inexpensive project, go to www.dictionaryproject.org. You can make your own labels with the four way test on them, a place for a student to sign his/her name and the name of your Rotary Club on the bottom of the label. You can make a simple project of putting the labels on during your club meeting or before or after. Then several club members can drop the books off at the local schools, which you coordinated the give away before ordering the books. The books are about $3.00 a book.
Your club members will get a kick out of reading the letters from the students who will receive the dictionaries/thesauruses. MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD’S ACADEMIC LIFE BY GIVING A DICTIONARY OR THEASARUSES, yet this year. If you have any questions, contact Fred Otto at 847-698-1160 or Brian Andersen at 630-985-4696.
PDG Brian Andersen will visit your club to promote the Student Dictionary project. For more information visit the website listed above.
What is the dictionary project? The goal of the dictionary project is to put an English dictionary or Thesaurus in the hands of every third grader or above in the United States, by starting in your local school districts. Take the time to ask your grandchildren or neighbor’s children if they have a dictionary in their home. Unfortunately, many children do not have a dictionary in their homes in the U.S. today. For about $1.75-2.50 a dictionary your Rotary Club can give a child in your community a dictionary.
Brian Andersen or Fred Otto will be happy to set up a time to come to your club and talk about the Dictionary Project. Call Brian today at 630-985-4600 or email him at brian@brianandersen.net, or call Fred Otto at 847-698-1160. Alternatively, you can get information about the project by logging onto the Web at dictionaryproject.org. The Dictionary Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
