City Scavenger Hunt, Sept. 2005
Rotex organized and sponsored an all day event for 6440 and 6450 Inbound students, and Rotex members, involving over 60 people!  Beginning with a chaperoned train ride into the city, Inbounds and Rotex members met for breakfast, catching up with one another, and getting into smaller groups for the city Scavenger Hunt.  Then, the students spent the afternoon walking all around downtown Chicago getting pictures of all the city monuments on their list.  Some of the items on the list included:  Sears Tower, “the Bean” sculpture in Millennium Park, the lions in front of the Art Museum, etc.  All of the students had a great time exploring the city, spending time with each other, and getting to know their Rotex group leaders.  For dinner, we all met at Gino’s East for a private pizza party.  The students were in heaven because they were allowed to (and even encouraged!) to write on the walls of the restaurant and leave their mark, not to mention have some great Chicago style deep-dish pizza!  Rotex made sure that all of the students were back on the trains and back home by 8pm…but not before we got a group photo of us all (see photo)!  This was a great event, and the Inbounds and Rotex members alike all enjoyed themselves.  Due to the fact that many Inbounds are staying with host families that live far from downtown Chicago, they do not have many opportunities to visit the city.  So, it was a treat for many of the students, with even a few commenting that it was their first trip into the city!!  Rotex would like to this opportunity to thank District 6450 Rotarians, and host parents for all of their support.  We look forward to organizing a Spring event as well.

Upcoming Events

Spring 06 Inbound Event:  Rotex is hoping to raise enough money to plan a Spring event for the students.  Again, the students would take a train to the city for the day, take a tour of the Sears Tower.  Then head to Millennium Park to visit and have lunch at the party room of Park Millennium (condo building).   The main event  is still to be determined…either the students would see a Chicago Fire Soccer game, or visit one of the Museums on Museum campus.

Fundraisers

Rotex was able to raise over $2500 through a silent auction at the 6450 District Conference 2 years ago.  Thanks to this fundraiser, Rotex has been able to sponsor two events and ideally Rotex would like to organize and sponsor two events during the year (Spring/Fall) for each group of Inbound students.

Another use of the money we raise through fundraisers is to have scholarships of $500 for two outbound students (one from each district), towards the cost of their plane ticket.  We would like to offer this because we know that not every outbound applicant has the means to cover the cost of the plane ticket to their foreign country (usually over $1,000 for an open-ended ticket, cost to be covered by the students and their parents).

ROTEX Chicago
Serving District 6450 & 6440

What is ROTEX?

ROTEX” refers to an organization of Rotary Exchange students that have returned home from their year-long exchange.

Why the need for ROTEX?
  1. Rotary Exchange returnees or “rebounds” quickly learn that
only other rebounds can truly share and understand their
personal excitement about their travels and experiences in
    their second country.
  2. Socializing and working with other rebounds helps the young adults to reintegrate into their original culture, yet continue to grow as the international person they have become.
  3. ROTEX involvement helps the students to remain integrated in Rotary, the organization they know is responsible for molding their lives as global citizens.
What does ROTEX Chicago do?
  1. Support the current inbounds
  2. Give guidance and support to future outbounds
  3. Increase the awareness of the Youth Exchange Program in the community
  4. Maintain the close connection to other past exchange students
  5. Connect potential host families with the Rotary Clubs
  6. Coordinate with Rotary Clubs in surrounding districts to promote the Youth Exchange Program
