Elimination of Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation recently eliminated Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships for 3 or 6 months of language study.  District 6450 Rotary Clubs working with candidates who planned to apply/interview in 2009-2010 for a Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship in 2010-2011 should advise them that a special exception will be made for 2010-2011 to allow them to study a foreign language using an Academic Year Ambassadorial Scholarship but additional restrictions will apply.

The (language-study) Scholarship would be required to be a 9 month program (which is about the same for a regular scholarship) and the applicant must have a humanitarian-related objective in choosing to study the language. The scholar could (under this policy exception) plan to study in a language school/institute (instead of a normal university). In future years, this exceptional waiver of rules would not apply.
The scholar must have already studied the target language for at least two years as is required with all Academic Year scholars.  All guidelines, requirements, and paperwork of Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships applies. Applicants should not be using Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship applications since that program no longer exists.

Note that The Rotary Foundation has also eliminated the lesser known "Grants for University Teachers" and "Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships."

All scholarship applications are due to Paul Carpenter, c/o Hoa Lan, 1059 W Argyle St., Chicago, IL 60640  For express mailing use telephone (773) 561-2892.
Please contact District 6450 Ambassadorial Scholarships Committee Chair Paul Carpenter at paul.carpenter@rotary.org or (847) 866-3270 for further information.

Summer Reading Program gets Boost
Park Forest, IL, Tuesday, May 19, 2009, Representatives from the Rotary Club of Park Forest donated one hundred fifty dictionaries and two bicycles to the University Park Public Library District for their Summer Reading Club 2009 “Be Creative @ Your Library”.
Rotarians James Settles, president, Tiffani Graham, secretary, and Eugene Sparing, international service chair, attended the libraries board meeting and formally presented these wonderful donations to Rotary member and Library Director, Kelley D. Nichols and the University Park Public Library District Board of Trustees: Marilyn j. Payton, president, James W. Young, vice-president, Sheryl L. Jones-Harper, Treasurer, Deborah Orr, secretary, Vivian Covington, Marilois Green and Jewell Thompson.  The event was taped courtesy of Rotary’s media specialist, Christel Allen.
After the dedication, vice-president James W. Young graciously accepted the dictionaries on behalf of the library board and stated that as a school teacher, he recognizes the value and importance of such a precious gift for children. The Library Board thanked the Rotary Club of Park Forest and both committees encouraged Kelley D. Nichols to continue to be an advocate for literacy and a community-service liason. Kelley was awarded with a plaque and a dictionary was presented to the board members in attendance.
Rotarian Eugene Sparing explained that the Dictionary Donations were a special project of EarlyAct, a group of about thirty two 6th and 7th graders whose motto is “Service Above Self”. They made the dedication stickers and placed them inside of each dictionary. A total of 1,000 dictionaries will be donated to 3rd graders in school district 162, 163, Park Forest Library and University Park Library. The library board expressed their gratitude and asked that Eugene commend the youth on their great service to the community.
Rotary President James Settles, Sr. noted that the bicycles are part of a joint project with the South East Rotary Club of Chicago.  A number of bicycles were donated to South East Rotary by the local police department.  Due to the condition of some of the bikes, the Bike Doctors, 17306 South Kedzie, Hazel Crest, is supporting the Rotary Club by donating a portion of the repairs to the bikes.
The bicycles and the dictionaries will be used to support Summer Reading Club 2009 “Be Creative @ Your Library”.  This state-wide themed program is held every summer to encourage reading while school is out.

Past District Governor Passes At 87

Our dear friend and long-time member, Edward F. Kavina,
passed away this weekend at the age of 87.

Ed, a retired florist, whose business on Cermak Road survived for more than 50 years first joined our club in 1959.

Ed served his country during World War II as a Hospital Corpsman attached to the Marines including service on Guadalcanal.

He rose through the ranks of the Rotary Club of Cicero, beginning with Sergeant At Arms for the 1960-61 year and then served as Director, Club Officer, President (1956-66), and as Chairman of the District Conference held at Lake Lawn Lodge in the 1970’s.  He was elected District Governor and served the 1977-78 term.  That year the Rotary theme was "Serve to Unite Mankind."  He was very active in the District attending many district conferences and international conventions.  He was instrumental in the formation of the District’s College of Past District Governors and served as its Chairman for many years.

He retired from business several years ago and remained active in Rotary until health issues forced his retirement from weekly meetings that he normally was religious about attending.  Ed had over 40 years of perfect attendance occasionally going to more than one meeting a week.  For years, he was perhaps the best-known member of the Rotary Club of Cicero.

Our sympathies go to his loyal wife, Ruth, his right arm, and his two children; Jim and Judy.  Services were arranged at Hallowell and James in Countryside.                                                               (April 16, 2009)

Re: Family Fun Day at Great America, Saturday July 18th, 2009

The three Rotary Districts of northern Illinois are planning a FUN DAY at Great America. Matt Delawder will plan and chair the event on behalf of District #6450.

Matt is a member of Addison Rotary Club and is a Past Assistant Governor.  He was the go-to guy for arranging fun and fellowship events within the AG group.  I`m sure he will do a great job of working with Nanette Sowa of District #6440 and the event`s chairpersons from District #6420.  Matt`s e-mail address is matt@swdinc.com   His phones are 630-231-9801 at home, and 630-589-3420 at work.

In planning this event, I hope the committee seeks to include not only Rotarians and their families, but also all our respective Interact, Rotaract, Early Act, and Youth Exchange families. Perhaps clubs with resources might even help subsidize the cost for our young people.

Thanks again to everyone involved!

The presentation in support of the new wing on the Easter Seals Hospital by District 6450 to Easter Seals is commemorated by this huge check.  This was prsented at the District White Sox outing August 7th at Cellular Field in Chicago. Rotaract’s Koryo Mission 1 Successful!
After a lot of planning, fundraising, and coordination, $4,000.00 in medicine aid was contributed by the Rotaract Club of Chicago Far North to our official project partner and DPRK sponsor, Korean Federation for the Protection of the Disabled (KFPD) to assist victims from the flood of 2007 as well as other needy women and children.  This mission has been a relationship-building mission in support for the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital and Pyongyang Orphanage through the sponsorship of the Korean Federation for the Protection of the Disabled (KFPD).  This is one of two missions that are being carried out this year. The hospital severely lacks many essential medicines including penicillin, which is one of the several different types of medicines included in the contribution.   The donated medication will help offset the shortage in medicine aid needed by DPR Korean flood victims that are still suffering from a myriad of diseases from last summer’s floods.

Please read the press release for the remainder of this report.  Posted 7-21-2008

AG Meetings

The Assistant Governors meet once a month to discuss the workings of the District and the Rotary Clubs.

This photo was taken at the July 17th AG Meeting. Assistant Governor Coordinator Stan and Governor Michael had the agenda prepared.

Often, when District events are on the calendar, committee chairs and Rotarians are invited to attend these special sessions.  Otherwise, these meetings are special to the Governor and his Assistant Governors and will cover a multitude of topics.  Then, the Assistant Governors will meet with the Rotary Club and Rotaract Club Presidents to keep the them informed.

EASTER SEALS - AUTISM

Two Stars of the Easter Seals Fundraiser:

District Governor Michael Slevnik, and Autism Spokesperson & TV/Movie Actor Joe Mantegna, discussed fundraising strategies with Chicago Rotary`s Tim Muri and business leaders in Chicago.

District Governor Michael is continuing the District`s effort to raise money to help fund the Autism Diagonistic Center.  Rotary District 6450 is heavily involved in this Easter Seals project because an Ohio District started Easter Seals and since, it was adopted by Districts across the country. This Diagnostic Center is important to the people of District 6450 because this genetic disorder is very difficult to diagnous early and to maximize theraphy and treatment, DG Michael, DGE Jim Czerwionka, and DGN Robb Knuepfer are committed to finishing the District`s financial pledge.

Read about a group project from Rotary Club of Chicago Far North, Chicago Lakeview, Chicago Northwest, and Chicago Rotaracts:

This project was so much fun.

First of all the Food Depository is a huge place.  So well organized and blessed because on that evening about 100 volunteers showed to work as volunteers.  Us Rotarians were about 30+.  The Rotarians and a few others were sent to box dry packages of milk.  We were all taken to a special place where 5 stainless steel tables were used to empty boxes full of packages of dry milk.  We had to take 3 packages, place them inside a plastic bag, close the bag.  Then re-packaged the milk to the original box, but now in packages of 3.

When we finished that project, we were taken to another area close by to open huge boxes full of snacks.  There, we had to empty the snack packages and place them on stainless steel tables, we had to box them on 4 lb. boxes making sure there was a variety of snacks.  The weight scales were on the tables, when the 4 lb. box was full of snacks, it was sent to the guys that sealed the boxes, other guys would place them on the wood pallets. Some of us just unpacked from the huge boxes the snacks, others were placing the empty packages in the special waste carts, others were breaking the boxes, we were on a roll.

That night we packaged over 600 4 lb. boxes of snacks.  We were told that the Food Depository sends most of the donated food to over 600 organizations throughout Chicago to give to the poor, to the hungry, to the soup kitchens, and to the churches.

It was great fun.  as you can see from the pictures, everyone who participated had a big smile and enjoyed it .  We were there on January 9th from 6 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Members from the Far North, Lakeview, Rotaracts, and Northwest were present.  I personally want to do it again this year.

PolioPlus in the news...
What Does It Mean?                   October 8, 2007

Earlier this afternoon I received my web pagey edition of The Toronto Star and immediately noted the headline Polio Vaccine Paralyzes Nigerian Children.  (See attachment).   The article will probably appear in tomorrow`s edition of The Star.  I had anticipated receiving some emails over the weekend asking whether I had seen the article and what did I know about about the outbreak.  It came as an absoute surprise to me, so I decided to speak to someone who would have some answers.  I immediatrely phoned Carol Pandak, Manager, PolioPlus Program and was able to get some answers.

Carol has provided me with two papers that address vaccine-derived poliovirus, one of them being a very descriptive Q & A.  I leave it to you to read the newspaper article, then digest the contents of the two papers.  I think you will find them self-descriptive which is why I am not about to repeat that which has already been said.

I can only hope that they can address this problem as quickly as possible.  Things have been looking very positive for Nigeria.  The October 3rd figures show 201 reported cases as compared to 847 cases for the same period last year; a reduction of 76%..

Today starts the Canadian "Thanksgiving Holiday."  Let` us all, Canadians and Americans, be thankful that we live in a polio-free North American continent.

THE PLAN THAT INVOLVED 3 ROTARY CLUBS, A INTERACT CLUB AND A ROTARACT CLUB

Camp Shaw-wa-na-see-9/22/07:  The three clubs in Kankakee County, Bradley-Bourbonnais, Kankakee and Manteno, applied for and received a District Grant to paint the dinning hall at Camp Shaw-waw-nas-see.  Camp Shaw was established in 1946 and is the best kept secret in all of beautiful Kankakee County.  On the 100 plus acres of plains and woodlands one will find a number of different size cabins, dinning hall with full kitchen, conference center, nature cabin, and crafts lodge.

PAUL & JEAN HARRIS HOME FOUNDATION

(COMELY BANK)

A group of dedicated Rotarians have formed the Paul and Jean Harris Home Foundation (PJHHF) for the purpose of acquiring, restoring and preserving the residence for future Rotarians to enjoy. The property was acquired just prior to our Centennial Convention last year with the help of the Naperville Rotary Charities Foundation.

We are now in the process of raising 5 million US dollars, which will enable us to fulfill our objectives and operate the property in the future. Proceeds will be used as follows:

  • REPAY LOAN PRINCIPAL OF $500,000 PLUS INTEREST @ 6.5%
  • RENOVATE HOME
  • PROVIDE LANDSCAPING
  • BUY AUDIO VIDEO EQUIPMENT
  • ACQUIRE COMPUTERS & SCANNING EQUIPMENT
  • BUILD CLIMATE CONTROLLED ARCHIVAL FACILITY
  • RESERVE $4,000,000 FOR ENDOWMENT FUND
  • IDENTIFY A ROTARIAN AS LIVE-IN CUSTODIAN
  • EMPLOY AN ARCHIVIST AT APPROPRIATE TIME
  • ASSIST IN PROVIDING PERPETUAL CARE TO THE HARRIS/SCHIELE CEMETERY SITE

Several Japanese Districts and individual Rotarians have already begun to help us in our fund-raising efforts and we are hopeful each of us will use our influence and resources to facilitate funding the project. Restoration work will be implemented as funds become available
